Many snowbirds are finding that the cost of living the snowbird lifestyle has gone up dramatically for many things, including real estate, property taxes, condo and HOA fees, rentals, flights, gas, groceries and more.
Some traditional snowbird destinations have also become too expensive for many Canadians, but there are still ways to spend time there - or to find more affordable alternatives elsewhere.
Today’s snowbirds are different from previous generations in that they are more adventurous - and happy to explore different warm-weather regions around the world.
There are many ways to achieve affordability for snowbirds, and location is an important consideration, whether it be a more affordable destination - or affordable options within destinations that have become more expensive.
To help snowbirds find affordable destinations, Snowbird Advisor is creating a series of articles on affordable destination options for snowbirds by region. Our first region, covered below, is the Caribbean. We will also be covering Central America, North America, Southern Europe, and Asia & the South Pacific in future articles.
Affordable Caribbean destinations for Canadian Snowbirds
If you're looking to spend part - or all - of the winter in the Caribbean, affordability varies enormously by country. In general, countries with fewer large resorts, lower living costs, and a larger supply of long-term rentals tend to be the best value.
However, snowbirds can often find affordable options in many of the more popular (and expensive) tourist destinations too.
Some Caribbean countries that offer affordable options for snowbirds include the Dominican Republic, Curacao, Jamaica, St. Maarten, Barbados and the Bahamas.
Dominican Republic
The first on our list for affordability in the Caribbean is the Dominican Republic. One of the lowest-cost destinations in the Caribbean, the D.R., as it is known, has a large inventory of condos and apartments for rent - and also offers good infrastructure.
Because of its large tourism infrastructure, the D.R has lots to offer snowbirds in the way of golf, tennis, restaurants, great beaches and a low cost of living.
Here are four regions of the D.R. that you should consider for affordability.
Las Terrenas – Best Overall Lifestyle
Las Terrenas in the beautiful Samana Peninsula has the nicest beaches of the four D.R. destinations we are recommending. If beaches are important, this is the place to be!
There is a strong French, Italian and Canadian expat presence here, which means there are more upscale restaurants and cafés.
This region is less crowded and less commercial than the north coast. However, rentals here are slightly more expensive than our other recommendations. The region is also further away from major services and hospitals – and from airports.
Las Terrenas is ideal if lifestyle and beaches matter more than getting the absolute lowest cost.
Cabarete – Best for Active Snowbirds
You’ll find Cabarete not far from the Puerto Plata airport for easy access on the North coast of the D.R.
It is a very walkable beachfront town with excellent restaurants and cafés. There’s also a strong Canadian and international community established here.
Cabarete is world-famous for kiteboarding and watersports – which also means it is windy most of the time and the ocean can be rough for casual swimming.
Recently, costs have risen significantly, but it is still good value for a Caribbean destination. It’s a perfect choice for active snowbirds who enjoy walking, socializing, golf, pickleball, surfing, or watersports.
Sosúa – Best Budget-Friendly Community
Sosúa has an interesting history – it is best known globally as a haven for Jewish refugees who fled Nazi-occupied Europe in the 1940s, evolving from a former banana plantation into a thriving agricultural and dairy hub, and ultimately into one of the Dominican Republic's most prominent tourist destinations.
You will usually find the cheapest rentals among the beach towns in Sosua, and there is a large, established expat community here.
Set on a calm, protected bay that is ideal for swimming and snorkelling – Sosua has plenty of affordable restaurants and is within easy reach of the Puerto Plata airport, hospitals and good shopping.
Sosua is probably your best choice if value is your priority - and it has a lovely setting.
Puerto Plata – Best Value and Services
Puerto Plata is an established tourist town with many large and popular hotels.
For snowbirds, it represents the lowest everyday living costs, where you will find better healthcare and shopping and a more authentic Dominican atmosphere. There’s also a cruise port and airport nearby.
Although there are many beaches, they are generally less impressive than other D.R. options.
There is more urban environment here and a smaller snowbird community than Sosúa or Cabarete.
Puerto Plata is the best choice for snowbirds who want to live like locals and keep costs low.
Jamaica
Jamaica can be an attractive snowbird destination because English is the official language, there are many direct flights from Canadian gateways during the winter, and Canadians can stay for extended periods.
It is more expensive than destinations such as the Dominican Republic - but areas outside major resort zones can offer good value.
These include Negril, Treasure Beach, Port Antonio, Runaway Bay and even Montego Bay - but away from the water and the resort zones.
For Canadian snowbirds looking to spend 1–6 months in Jamaica, the most affordable options are usually monthly apartment rentals, guesthouses, and locally owned hotels, rather than all-inclusive resorts.
Negril
The famous Negril beach area is popular with long-stay visitors. There are many apartments and guesthouses that offer monthly discounts.
The area offers good walkability and beach access and a friendly, laid-back atmosphere. You can expect lower costs if you stay away from Seven Mile Beach.
Treasure Beach
One of Jamaica's best-value coastal communities is Treasure Beach. Located on the South coast of Jamaica away from the resorts in Negril and the north coast, it is quieter than Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.
There is a sizeable expat and snowbird presence here, and it offers cheaper restaurants and rentals.
Port Antonio
If you are looking for lush scenery and a slower pace, Port Antonio near the tip of the island on the North coast features a very tropical ecosystem and climate.
Long-term rentals can be significantly cheaper than in the larger resort areas.
Port Antonio is popular with retirees and snowbirds seeking a less touristy environment.
Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios on the North Coast has some high-end resorts, but the area also offers many condos and apartments available for rent for monthly stays.
There is a good balance here of amenities – due to the tourism development - and affordability.
Long-term rental listings show many affordable local rentals outside the major resort zones, especially around towns such as Savanna-la-Mar, Brown's Town, and Linstead.
St. Maarten
St. Maarten can be surprisingly affordable for snowbirds compared with some other Caribbean islands, especially if you are willing to stay in a condo, apartment, or long-term rental rather than a beachfront resort. The island has a large inventory of vacation rentals and long-stay accommodations across a range of budget-friendly options.
Where to look in St. Maarten
You can find monthly condo rentals in areas like Simpson Bay, Cole Bay, and parts of Maho, which offer better value than beachfront hotels and resorts. Many property managers offer long-term winter rentals specifically for snowbirds.
- Simpson Bay – popular with snowbirds, walkable, plenty of restaurants.
- Cole Bay – more residential and often less expensive.
- Maho – convenient, near the airport and nightlife.
- Mullet Bay – attractive if you want beach access without paying luxury-resort prices.
Barbados
Barbados has been a vacation favourite with Canadians for many decades and has some very premium resorts and hotels. But there are affordable options for long-stays if you know where to look.
For Canadian snowbirds, the most affordable way to spend 2 – 6 months in Barbados is usually renting a furnished apartment on the South Coast rather than staying in a resort or guest house. Areas such as Oistins, Worthing, Maxwell, Bridgetown, and parts of Christ Church offer better value than the luxury West Coast, Holetown, Sandy Lane, and St. James, where you will find luxury hotels and much higher prices.
Oistins & Maxwell are popular with snowbirds and long-stay visitors. The area is very walkable, with good bus service, beaches, supermarkets, and restaurants.
One-bedroom furnished rentals can often be very reasonably priced depending on the season and proximity to the beach.
Worthing & Rockley are slightly more upscale but still offer good value. The area is excellent for people who want beach access without needing a car.
You will find apartment hotels that offer monthly rates.
Bridgetown & Black Rock offer the most affordable options in Barbados. Bridgetown is the capital and is a sizeable town with many services, shops and amenities.
You will find more residential areas here and have the opportunity to live like a local.
How to save money in Barbados
Long stays pay off! Stay 2 – 6 months instead of a few weeks. Monthly discounts on Airbnb and Vrbo can be substantial.
Book before the peak winter season (December – March), when prices rise sharply. As with so many snowbird destinations, longer commitments often secure better rates.
Choose inland or residential neighbourhoods a few blocks from the beach rather than beachfront units. And rent directly from owners or local agents after identifying an area you like.
Also be sure to check if utilities are included, as electricity can be expensive in Barbados, and furnished rentals vary widely in what they provide.
The Bahamas
You can certainly find affordable long-stay options in the Islands of The Bahamas, but some islands are much less expensive than others – and some locations on the island are more affordable.
Below are the best affordable locations in The Bahamas ranked in order of affordability.
Freeport on Grand Bahama
Freeport is usually the most affordable major snowbird destination in the Bahamas.
Long-term rentals are often 20–40% cheaper here than some other higher-priced areas. Snowbirds will find it less touristy and more relaxed.
There is great shopping, healthcare, and services available, and there are direct flights from Canada in the winter.
Eleuthera
Eleuthera is a quieter island with beautiful beaches and a growing expat community that will appeal to snowbirds.
Long-term rentals can be quite affordable, while offering an authentic Bahamian lifestyle.
Long Island and Cat Island
These islands attract snowbirds seeking lower rental costs, minimal crowding and excellent beaches and fishing. However, services and healthcare are more limited.
Nassau
Snowbirds looking for a long stay in Nassau should consider the Cable Beach area and the Love Beach area, which is also worth exploring.
Accommodations rentals for 2 – 4 months can often be found on VRBO and Airbnb, and through local rental property management companies.
Other strategies for affordability include cooking most meals yourself and seeking casual local restaurants away from the tourist areas.
A modest one-bedroom rental in Nassau can be found away from the beach area, and some all-inclusive hotels also offer long-stay packages which might provide the best all-round value.
Nassau has by far the most air connections from Canadian gateways and is the easiest to get to, which is also a factor in considering the overall costs.
For Canadian Snowbirds seeking the best value in the Bahamas, your best bet will be Grand Bahama and Freeport, followed by Eleuthera, Long Island, and Nassau.
If money is no object
Of course, there are many other choices within the Caribbean region where you will typically pay significantly higher prices, especially between January and March.
There are some beautiful places within this category, each with its unique features, including Turks & Caicos, St. Lucia, Antigua, Cayman Islands, Grenada, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and others.
The Bottom Line
The Caribbean offers guaranteed warm weather during the winter and a surprising number of affordable options for Canadian snowbirds if you know where to look and stay away from the major resort areas, making it a viable option for winter escapes.
