Best affordable destination options for Canadian snowbirds in Mexico

Affordable Mexican Destinations for Canadian Snowbirds

Mexico has been the second most popular winter destination for Canadian snowbirds, after the United States, for decades - offering snowbirds a variety of affordable, warm-weather escape options.

And while some popular tourist destinations in Mexico have become pricey in recent years, there are still plenty of affordable options for Canadian snowbirds, including in some of the more popular destinations if you stay away from the beachfront.

As the cost of going away for the winter has increased dramatically in recent years, Snowbird Advisor has created a series of resources to help snowbirds find affordable destination options, broken down by region. In this segment, we're covering Mexico.

The series also features articles on affordable destinations in the Caribbean, Central America, Southern Europe, and Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.

Why Mexico is a great choice for affordable destinations for snowbirds

Mexico is one of the best choices for Canadian snowbirds who want warm weather, relatively low living costs, good flight connections, and established Canadian expat communities in several areas.

Canadians can generally visit Mexico without a visa for stays of up to 180 days, although the period granted is determined on entry.

Top affordable choices for Canadian snowbirds include Lake Chapala & Ajijic, Merida, Manzanillo, San Miguel de Allende, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, La Paz, Mazatlan and Puerto Morelos, with many of these destinations offering their own unique vibe in terms of landscape, activities, lifestyle and even climate.

Before choosing, you should think about what’s important to you for a winter stay – Are you looking for a great beach, or is the beach less important? Do you want a robust tourist infrastructure or something more authentically Mexican? Are you seeking wellness options? Golf? Nightlife?

Which Mexican destinations are most popular with snowbirds?

Below is a list of some of the most popular Mexican snowbird destinations that can be affordable - with their pros and cons for Canadian snowbirds. Of course, Mexico is a very large country, and there are many other possible destinations where adventurous snowbirds can spend the winter, but we’ve focused on the ones with easy access, more developed infrastructure and established snowbird communities.

Lake Chapala & Ajijic

Lake Chapala for Canadian Snowbirds

Lake Chapala and Ajijic are inland destinations about 45 minutes from Guadalajara airport.

There’s a very large Canadian and American retirement and snowbird community here, providing a great social atmosphere for snowbirds.

You’ll find lots of things to do and get involved in - from art classes to wellness experiences to local restaurants, activities and more.

The climate is more like a warm spring rather than tropical heat.

The region is less expensive than the Puerto Vallarta area, and furnished rentals can be quite reasonable. You can find rentals for between $1,500 - $2,500 USD per month.

Mérida

Merida, Mexico for Canadian Snowbirds

Mérida is a great choice if you don't need to be directly on the beach.

Located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Merida is an attractive colonial city featuring excellent restaurants and culture.

Relatively affordable, Merida is also considered one of Mexico's safer major cities and has a large and growing expat community of Canadians and Americans.

The weather can get very hot here, particularly in the summer months and shoulder seasons.

Monthly rents can range from $2,000 to $4,000 CAD and up, depending on the size and location of the property.

Manzanillo

Manzanillo is an interesting option for snowbirds seeking affordable beach living on a budget.

Manzanillo has beautiful beaches, warm winter temperatures, and a more traditional Mexican former fishing village feel.

You’ll find lower prices than the major resort destinations and established foreign-resident communities

However, to get there, you will most likely have to connect in Mexico City or elsewhere.

Monthly rents can range from $3,000 to $4,500 CAD per month, but if you want beachfront, you will likely pay closer to $4,500 to $6,000.

Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta for Canadian Snowbirds

Puerto Vallarta isn't the cheapest destination for snowbirds, but it may be the best all-around choice if affordability doesn't mean the absolute lowest price.

PVR, as it is widely known, has a well-established tourism infrastructure and lots of accommodation choices in and around the town. It is also well served by many different airlines from Canada and the U.S. with multiple flights weekly.

Located on the Pacific Ocean with a series of bays, PVR has been attracting tourists for decades.

There is a large Canadian community here in the winter, a thriving culinary scene, lots of activities and festivals, and of course, great beaches. You will also find familiar retail stores such as Costco and Walmart if you’re looking for the convenience and comforts of home.

However, rental costs are higher in the winter than in some of the other destinations mentioned here. You can expect to pay from $3,200 to $5,500 USD and up per month. Again, it depends on location within PVR and whether you want a waterfront rental or are ok being off the water.

Playa del Carmen

Playa Del Carmen for Canadian Snowbirds

Playa del Carmen is a former village located halfway down the Mayan Riviera between Cancun and Tulum on the Caribbean side of Mexico.

Although very popular with tourists, it also has monthly rentals and a snowbird community.

Playa del Carmen has a warm climate – but January can be a little cooler at times – and is very walkable and easy to get around. There’s a great public beach as well.

There are multiple daily flights to Cancun from various Canadian gateways, so it’s easy to get to.

Although it was once more affordable, you can now expect to pay between $3,000 to $5,000 CAD per month, depending on the size of the rental unit and location.

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is a lovely colonial city in the central Mexico foothills with beautiful baroque Spanish architecture. The city center has cobblestone streets and a large square, and snowbirds have been coming here for years.

The city has a thriving arts community with lots of artists making their home here, and there are multiple colourful festivals throughout the year. For those more interested in the arts and not the beach, San Miguel is definitely worth considering.

Located at about 1,900 meters elevation, San Miguel escapes the hot, humid weather of the coastal regions and features a wonderful climate with dry, sunny days and lovely cool nights.

San Miguel has a long-established American and Canadian retirement community, which has led to many English-speaking services, restaurants, social organizations and activities geared toward foreigners.

While San Miguel is generally more expensive than places such as Mérida, Manzanillo or many smaller Mexican cities, you can still find apartments and houses for rent from between $1,200 for a studio to $5,500 CAD for a house.

Mazatlan

Mazatlan offers a more authentic Mexican city experience than some of the other more developed resort communities.

There is a long beachfront Malecón – or boardwalk – with lots of restaurants and activities.

Again, it’s considerably less expensive than Puerto Vallarta or the Mayan Riviera regions with a growing Canadian snowbird population.

There’s a good selection of condos and long-term rentals, and you’ll find a few direct winter flights from some Canadian cities – although this can vary from year to year.

Rentals can be found for around $2,500 – $3,800 CAD per month, with a two-bedroom mid-range rental averaging $900 – $1,500 CAD per month.

Safety considerations in Mexico

The Canadian government currently advises Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico overall, while some specific regions have stronger warnings.

As with all destinations worldwide, exercising caution and good judgement can go a long way to keeping you safe when you travel.

Wherever you go, even in Canada, nobody can ever guarantee your safety, but it is always advisable to check the Government of Canada’s Travel Advisory website for advice and guidance.

Healthcare availability

Quality healthcare is always an important consideration for snowbirds, especially when travelling beyond the United States.

The quality and availability of health care in Mexico can vary greatly by location, so it’s important do your research ahead of time.

And as for any travel outside your home province, and particularly outside Canada, it’s essential to obtain emergency travel medical insurance before you leave to avoid hefty medical bills should you need medical attention while travelling.

The bottom line

Mexico is high on the list of affordable winter destinations for Canadian snowbirds, with plenty of direct flights, a variety of destinations to choose from, affordable accommodations, great weather and closer proximity to Canada than most other international snowbird destinations.
