Canadian snowbirds who are NEXUS members and plan on spending the winter in the United States received some welcome news recently, as the U.S. eased registration requirements for NEXUS members staying 30 days or more.

Effective as of June 29, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) amended its alien registration regulations to recognize participation in certain Trusted Traveler Programs - including NEXUS, Global Entry, SENTRI and FAST - as evidence of registration.

For Canadian citizens, this means that if you were last admitted to the United States using NEXUS, your NEXUS admission would serve as evidence that you have already met the alien registration requirements, and as a result, you would not need to file Form G-325R to satisfy the alien registration requirement if you would have otherwise been required to do so.

There is an important distinction, however: 

The regulation only applies to individuals who were last admitted to the United States through NEXUS. 

This means that you must use your NEXUS card to enter the U.S. through a NEXUS lane or kiosk.

Merely possessing a NEXUS card or being a NEXUS member is not sufficient to satisfy the requirement. Accordingly, if you enter through the regular inspection process rather than using NEXUS, you may still need to file Form G-325R.
