San Antonio offers snowbirds more of everything

Travel

San Antonio is one of the better options for Canadian snowbirds, especially if you're looking for a mild winter, lower costs than popular snowbird destinations elsewhere and a city environment with plenty to do.

You'll find Spanish colonial history, museums, live music, festivals, and outstanding Tex-Mex cuisine.

Top attractions are historic The Alamo and the San Antonio River Walk – both attracting visitors year-round.

The downtown River Walk is a beloved Texas gem spanning a connected, 15-mile network of walkways and green spaces. Accessible by foot, bicycle, and in some places by river barge, it weaves through lively downtown, the art-filled Museum Reach, and the Missions National Historical Park, each stretch vibrant with its own personality. Seasonal events, waterfront dining, and kid-friendly attractions keep this coveted destination buzzing with local life.

“Winter Texans” are welcome here and rentals are generally less expensive than in many parts of Florida or Arizona, and everyday expenses such as dining and entertainment are reasonable.

The city also has several nationally recognized hospitals and specialists, which can provide snowbirds  peace-of-mind during an extended stay.

San Antonio is a great option for snowbirds who enjoy history, culture, restaurants, and live entertainment and prefer a city environment over a beach resort.

Things To Do

If you're spending several months in San Antonio as a snowbird, these are the city's major attractions:

  1. The Alamo - The Alamo is the most famous historic site in Texas.  The site commemorates the 1836 Battle of the Alamo.  There is free admission to the church.
  2. San Antonio River Walk - The famous San Antonio River Walk is a scenic 15-mile network of walkway along the river. Lined with restaurants, cafés, shops, and hotels, the River Walk is beautiful both during the day and at night.
  3. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park - The Missions National Historical Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with four beautifully preserved 18th-century Spanish missions connected by walking and cycling trails.
  4. Natural Bridge Caverns - Texas' largest commercial cave system has guided underground tours year-round and is about 30 minutes from downtown.
  5. San Antonio Zoo - One of the largest zoos in the United States, you’ll want to visit several times.  The San Antonio Zoo is a historic, 56-acre facility globally recognized for its massive bird collection, early cageless habitat designs, and deep wildlife conservation efforts.
  6. Pearl – Trendy district with restaurants, boutiques, a weekend farmers market, and riverside walking.
  7. Brackenridge Park – Large urban park ideal for walking, cycling, and picnics.
  8. Japanese Tea Garden – A peaceful garden with waterfalls, koi ponds, and stone pathways.
  9. Market Square --El Mercado– The largest Mexican market in the U.S., featuring food, crafts, and live entertainment.
  10. Tower of the Americas – Observation deck with panoramic views of the city.
  11. San Antonio Museum of Art – Extensive collections spanning ancient Mediterranean, Asian, Latin American, and contemporary art.

Day trips

Fredericksburg – German heritage, wineries, and shopping (about 1½ hours).

Austin – Live music, museums, and vibrant downtown (about 1¼ hours).

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area – Famous granite dome with excellent hiking.

New Braunfels – Historic German town with the Gruene Historic District and river recreation.

Culture and Entertainment

If culture, entertainment, and shopping are important to you, then San Antonio is one of the strongest snowbird destinations in Texas. In fact, it offers considerably more cultural activities than many popular retirement communities in Florida or Arizona.

Culture

San Antonio has a rich blend of Spanish, Mexican, German, and Texan heritage.

Highlights include The Alamo and the city's five historic Spanish missions -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The San Antonio Museum of Art and the McNay Art Museum are both popular attractions

Entertainment

There's always something happening in San Antonio, especially during the winter months:

  • Broadway touring productions at the Majestic Theatre
  • Concerts, opera, ballet, and symphony performances at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts
  • NBA games featuring the San Antonio Spurs
  • Live country, jazz, blues, and Latin music throughout the city
  • Festivals, farmers' markets, and food events nearly every weekend

Fitness and Outdoor Recreation

For active snowbirds, San Antonio is an excellent choice. It offers year-round outdoor recreation, extensive parks and trails, and a mild winter climate that makes it easy to stay active.

Walking and cycling

One of San Antonio's biggest strengths is its trail system.

  • San Antonio River Walk isn't just the downtown tourist area—it connects to over 32 km of scenic walking and cycling trails that extend north and south along the river.
  • The city's extensive Greenway Trails network provides well-maintained paved paths for walking, jogging, and biking through natural areas.

Parks and hiking

San Antonio has hundreds of parks, including:

  • Government Canyon State Natural Area – hiking, wildlife viewing, and the famous dinosaur tracks.
  • Phil Hardberger Park – miles of walking paths, fitness stations, and a unique land bridge connecting the park.
  • Brackenridge Park – a large urban park with trails, picnic areas, and gardens.

While the terrain isn't mountainous, there are plenty of enjoyable hikes with gentle hills.

Golf

Golf is a major attraction for snowbirds. San Antonio has dozens of public and private courses, and winter is prime golf season. Green fees are generally lower than in Scottsdale or Palm Springs, making it an attractive option for frequent players.

Fitness facilities

You'll find a wide range of options:

  • National gym chains
  • Community recreation centers
  • Yoga and Pilates studios
  • Pickleball clubs
  • Swimming pools
  • Senior fitness programs

Many 55+ communities also include their own fitness centers and organized exercise classes.

Pickleball and tennis

Pickleball has grown rapidly in San Antonio, with dedicated courts in parks, recreation centers, and retirement communities. Tennis is also widely available through public facilities and private clubs.

Water recreation

Although San Antonio isn't on the coast, you can enjoy:

  • Kayaking on portions of the San Antonio River
  • Boating and fishing at nearby lakes such as Canyon Lake and Calaveras Lake
  • Weekend trips to the Texas Hill Country for scenic drives, hiking, wineries, and small towns

Shopping

Whether you like boutique shopping or large malls, San Antonio has plenty of options as you would expect in a larger city.

Popular shopping areas include:

  • The Shops at La Cantera – upscale outdoor shopping with brands like Nordstrom, Apple and Lululemon.
  • The Rim – restaurants, big-box stores, entertainment, and specialty retailers.
  • North Star Mall – one of the city's largest enclosed malls.
  • Pearl District – boutique shops, artisan markets, cafés, and one of the best weekend farmers' markets in Texas.

Food and Dining

Here are some reasons it's especially appealing:

  • Outstanding Tex-Mex and Mexican food. San Antonio is famous for breakfast tacos, enchiladas, puffy tacos, fajitas, tamales, and homemade tortillas. You'll find everything from inexpensive neighborhood cafés to upscale Mexican restaurants.
  • Excellent barbecue. Central Texas barbecue is a local specialty, with smoked brisket, ribs, sausage, and turkey drawing both locals and visitors.
  • Growing international cuisine. The city has strong Italian, Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, and Latin American restaurant communities, so it's easy to eat something different every week.
  • Good value. Compared with cities like Scottsdale or Palm Springs, restaurant prices are generally more affordable, making it easy to dine out several times a week.

Some of the best areas for dining include:

  • The Pearl District – The city's premier foodie destination, with chef-driven restaurants, cafés, bakeries, breweries, and a popular weekend farmers' market.
  • River Walk – Beautiful waterfront patios with everything from casual Tex-Mex to upscale dining. It's more tourist-oriented but still offers excellent choices.
  • Southtown – Trendy, artsy neighborhood filled with independent restaurants, wine bars, and craft breweries.
  • Alamo Heights – A favorite with locals for relaxed cafés, bakeries, and upscale neighborhood restaurants.

For snowbirds who enjoy socializing, you'll also find:

  • Happy-hour specials nearly every day.
  • Outdoor patios that are comfortable through most of the winter.
  • Food festivals, farmers' markets, and wine events throughout the season.
  • Plenty of casual restaurants where retirees gather regularly.

You can check out San Antonio's great food and dining options here.
