Do Canadian snowbirds need to update their Form G-325R when returning to Canada from the U.S.?

Question

My wife and I both completed Form G-325R when we drove to the U.S. for the winter because we were staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days, and we were not issued I-94s when we crossed the border.

We are now returning to Canada and are wondering if we need to update our G-325R information? We are getting conflicting information and would appreciate some clarification.

No, Canadians do not need to update their Form G-325R information when returning to Canada. Your G-325R is only valid for the duration of your stay in the U.S.

Here are a few important tips to be aware of:

  • You are only required to complete Form G-325R if you are visiting the U.S. for 30 days or more and you were not issued a Form I-94 when entering the U.S.
  • Form G-325R is only valid for a single trip to the U.S. If you leave the United States and return for a subsequent trip of 30 days or more and are not issued an I-94 for your subsequent trip, you will need to submit a new G-325R.
  • If you fly to the U.S., an I-94 will usually be generated automatically. However, if you enter the U.S. through a land border, an I-94 will not usually be generated.
